This grant supports the expansion and continuation of Mixed Ability rugby at Chippenham Rugby Football Club (CRFC), including a new under-16 team and continued support for the 16+ Chippenham Cavaliers.
Mixed Ability rugby embraces inclusive sport, welcoming people of all backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels. Players compete under standard rugby rules, often facing local social teams, which helps embed inclusive sport within mainstream settings.
Since launching in January 2024, the club had already seen rapid growth: 51 members, including 12 players with disabilities and 8 female players, as well as partnerships with care homes, local schools, and NHS services. With no existing Mixed Ability rugby provision in Chippenham, this project fills a vital gap – previously, the closest option was in Melksham.
The funding covers coaching support, equipment, and a hardship fund to ensure children and adults from low-income households can participate without barriers. By fostering a sense of belonging, improving access to sport, and promoting physical and mental wellbeing, the project enhances social cohesion, reduces isolation, and empowers people across a wide age and ability spectrum.
