Awarded during the 2024–25 financial year, this grant supported the delivery of a free community lunch held on Christmas Day.
Organised by Sheldon Road Methodist Church, the event provided a warm, festive meal for 44 guests and 34 volunteers. The meal was open to anyone who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day, offering not just nourishment but companionship and human connection during what can be a difficult time of year.
Costs included food for a two-course meal with tea and coffee, as well as heating and lighting for the venue. Volunteers helped prepare, serve, and socialise with guests, making it a true community effort. The event complemented the church’s regular free Saturday community meals, contributing to ongoing efforts to combat loneliness, reduce food poverty, and build local resilience.
This initiative provided emotional and financial relief to people experiencing hardship, grief, or isolation – particularly important during the festive season. With strong local partnerships including GP surgeries, social services, food banks, and churches, the event is well-established and valued by the community.
