This grant will fund the fit-out of a new storage and packing room for FoodBox, a volunteer-led food distribution project operating from St Peter’s Church in Chippenham.
The project aims to alleviate hunger and food poverty, while reducing food waste, by improving the facilities used to sort, store, and pack food parcels for those in need.
The funding will allow FoodBox to transform a bare, unused room into a safe, functional space for their operations. Purchases will include shelving, storage units, tables, dollies, and crates – all in line with health and safety requirements.
FoodBox delivers weekly food parcels to around 115 Chippenham households and demand is growing, with a waiting list of 15 households due to current capacity limits. The project is entirely volunteer-run and has no financial overheads with all donations going directly towards food or operational needs.
A properly fitted space will improve the efficiency and safety of the project, allowing volunteers to continue delivering vital support during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. The project particularly benefits elderly people, families, and those experiencing social isolation.
FoodBox receives referrals from a range of local charities and support organisations, including Citizens Advice and Christians Against Poverty. While some recipients receive additional services, food poverty remains a critical issue for many, exacerbated by rising living costs. The project operates independently from St Peter’s Church’s main activities, but the Church provides vital support through use of premises and financial administration.
