Woodland Creatures Sculpture Trail
Take a stroll through a small woodland area at Westmead Open Space and discover 12 beautifully carved animal sculptures along the trail. Each sculpture is based on drawings by local schoolchildren, bringing the woodland creatures to life for families to enjoy.

How the Trail Began
The trail started in 2019 with the installation of a wooden owl sculpture near the entrance to Westmead Open Space. The owl was carved by local sculptor, Ollie Adams, and unveiled by Lady Lansdowne to celebrate a new partnership between us at Chippenham Borough Lands Charity and Wiltshire College and University Centre.
Inspired by the positive response, Ollie kindly offered to create more sculptures, and we launched a design competition to involve local children. We invited children from every Chippenham primary school and St Nicholas School to submit drawings of woodland creatures. One winner was chosen from each school, with Lady Lansdowne also selecting an overall winner who received £500 in books for their school (Frogwell Primary School) and a £25 book voucher. All other winners received book vouchers too.

Meet The Creatures
Sculptor Ollie Adams brought each winning drawing to life, creating a trail that celebrates both nature and creativity. As you explore, you can discover:

Community Design
The trail route was thoughtfully designed by Ollie Adams working alongside others from the Gardening Team from Wiltshire College Lackham, creating a peaceful, shaded walk through the wooded area. The trail is maintained with support from local volunteers.
Keeping The Trail Alive
In 2024, volunteers from Chippenham Shed began ongoing restoration work to preserve and protect the sculptures. We provide funding and materials, while Chippenham Shed generously contribute their time and expertise to ensure the trail can be enjoyed for years to come.

Thank You
We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this trail possible: the local children who took part in the competition, Ollie Adams for his incredible generosity and artistic talent, Russell and Colin for creating the trail paths, our judges, Russell and Phil from Wiltshire College and University Centre, and the staff and trustees from Chippenham Borough Lands Charity who made it all happen.
Special thanks to Ollie Adams for his time, generosity and wonderful gift to our local community, and to local artist Charlie-Graham May for his beautiful trail artwork and map.
We hope the trail will continue to be a favourite spot for visitors to Westmead Open Space – a place for children and all ages to explore and enjoy for many years to come.
